At Mariposa, we strive to create gardens that support the lives of birds, butterflies, and bees. We work with rather than against nature, creating life above and below the soil. We design for both beauty and ecological diversity. Our goal is to foster a connection to the natural world for all our clients.

In our gardens, everything works together. Complex associations form from the way plants are placed together. When we work to create complex associations, the garden becomes healthier and more able to resist pests and diseases. The soil teems with life and supports a healthy soil-food web. This creates more resilient plants that are less dependent on water and can resist diseases and pests.

The five fundamental concepts on which we design our gardens are: Be water wise; use no chemical fertilizers or toxic pesticides; enhance biodiversity to build a complex, thriving web of living beings; provide food, water, and shelter for pollinators; and support the larger cycles and systems of nature. We do this by building fertility in the soil, giving plants what they need to thrive, increasing habitat value and adding food for humans too.

If you follow these principles in designing, building, and caring for your garden, you will greatly reduce or even eliminate pest pressure as a result of biological diversity. The production of fruits and vegetables will also increase. Beauty and harmony in the garden for humans and wildlife will be felt and will contribute to a greater sense of peace and happiness. You will have a place for pollinators to thrive, a defense against decreasing populations, and nutrient-dense, clean food for your table.

This is how we help you find your home in nature.
