Digging Deeper: Creating the Canvas: The Making of Dragonfly Farm

Mark and I bought this 15-1/2 acre property in 1998. It was degraded post agricultural and was used to graze cattle. It had an David Torphy designed house on it, and that was it. We fell in love with this house first. I am a botanist/horticulturist/ garden designer who after designing gardens for over 30 years suddenly had a blank canvas. We called it Dragonfly Farm after witnessing the late August migration of literally thousands of large Darners in migration across our property. It was a magical and defining moment. What happened next was 23 years of restoring, and creating what is now Dragonfly Farm. We have created destinations across our 15-1/2 acres that ecologically and aesthetically complement one another.  One of the things that I have noticed now that I have  3 Open Days under my belt, is that I am never able to give visitors as much time individually as they have questions. As a professional I also feel a need to share the story,  the decisions, and even the mistakes that we have made in the creation of this very special place we call home. I am hoping to give Digging Deeper guests the ultimate tour of the farm and all of its destinations, with the time to hear its story and to answer all the questions that they might have. This is a great opportunity for visitors who have been here before, and found themselves wanting more.
