The Cottage

This garden was constructed on the site of one of Lake Forest's early farms. The forecourt is of special interest, and boxwood, yews, and vinca were used to create a green tapestry wall. This was a favorite of Rosemary Verey, the English landscape designer who worked with Dorothy Hebert of Gardens In Progress on the design of this garden. Mrs. Verey's book The Garden in Winter is a reminder of winter being the longest season in our Midwest gardens, so as we followed her advice, you will see heavy planting of boxwoods and yews for outlining the deep perennial beds on the property. The use of plants with strong architectural interests such as the hawthorn hedgerow, Japanese tree lilac allée, and willow grove are all interesting additions to the winter landscape. Spring is another special season for this garden. Fifteen thousand bulbs bring in the seasons, all with traditional bulbs being used. The favorite of the owners are the fritillaria, which are found in great abundance on the property. The iron gate in the stone wall leads to a white shade garden. Note the climbing hydrangea used as ground cover for edging the bed of Solomon's seal, lily of the valley, Tricyrtis, roses, phlox, Leucojum, sweet woodruff, and trillium. The old Chicago park bench in the shade garden provides a place for passersby to rest and enjoy the view. Of special interest are the garden objects you will find throughout the property that represent the work of American and British designers working during the Arts & Crafts period. Enjoy.
