Open Days, Water feature, Plant Collection, Garden Extras, Edibles
The garden at Clove Brook Farm was designed by P. Allen Smith in collaboration with potter Christopher Spitzmiller in 2014. It was meant to complement the 1830s Greek Revival farmhouse, complete with a custom fence inspired by the balustrade on the Louisiana plantation “Felicity” in the movie 12 Years a Slave. The garden, planted in 2014, sprang from the earth with great gusto and was influenced by the many visits to the garden of close friend Bunny Williams. The horseshoe-shaped layout begins with two long, mixed perennial beds toward the front, filled with vibrant blooms, and the additional rectangular beds include a mix of mostly flowers and some vegetables planted to bloom seasonally, so there is always something to enjoy. In the spring and early summer, the wattle fence supports sweet peas and snap peas. Then dahlias grow up in their place, resembling colorful fireworks in late summer. Allen chose topiaries, Japanese willows, and white ‘Phantom’ hydrangeas to accent the front perennial beds and create a focal point.
GARDEN EXTRAS: Christopher Spitzmiller’s adjacent pottery studio will be open with items for sale.
