Pollinator Garden

People are always surprised that we grow primarily flowers and shrubs, and there is not a tomato or zucchini plant to be found in our garden. Our response is that we grow food for insects. This is not a higher calling than growing food for us humans. Just a different calling, but a calling nonetheless. Our fifteen-year-old garden is watered every two weeks or so throughout summer, and in an effort to push out weeds, is overly crowded with both native and non-native xeric/dryland plants. We have not modified the native soil (shale and clay) in any way. If a plant cannot survive in heat, clay, and on just-enough water—well, it doesn't survive.

This garden's estimated size is 3,000 sq. feet.
