Wood Thrush Garden
Killingworth, CT
About
Wood Thrush Garden is a small (9 acre) farm in the lower Connecticut River Valley. We purchased it in 1999, removed existing foundation plants in 2005, and began a lifelong journey of collecting native plants—and removing nonnatives—at that time.
Currently we have 40 named garden plots, many quite small, comprised of 100% native species. In addition, we established a 3-acre native wildflower meadow, under the direction of landscape designer Larry Weaner from Glenside, PA. His webpage displays a number of photos of our property, especially the meadow.
Early in our gardening experience, we considered ourselves native plant “collectors,” not gardeners or
horticulturists. From our first plant until our most recent, we acquired 800 different species, almost all of them members of our ecoregion’s flora. In recent years, our focus has shifted slightly to biodiversity per se. Thus, all species that we bring in now are first vetted for their high value to herbivores, whether insect or animal.
This garden's estimated size is 5 acres.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: All of the paths through and around our gardens are easily traversed. Some are two narrow for wheelchairs, however.
