The Kunkera Garden

Franklin Lakes, NJ

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

The garden consists of three levels at the rear of the house, which is enclosed by a high deer fence. On the first level to the left of the house, you will find an abundant vegetable garden and newly built greenhouse, a distinctive potting shed “Villa Bambi,” and a Hummingbird Garden in front of the Hydrangea Cove.

Directly behind the house is the entertaining area, with pool, grill, and a tiny goldfish pond (in an old-looking water well). To the right side of the pool, stroll through the dahlia garden … white garden… then come up to the second level where the woodland and serene forest is filled with rhododendrons, hostas, and ferns.

On your return you pass the Butterfly Garden and decide whether to continue on the second level filled with rock garden perennials on your left and roses on your right or go along the third level to see the Winter Garden filled with conifers, hellebores, and a hosta mural. While you’re up there, visit the coop, home of “The Girls”—8 hens. Descending, either by stairs or woodland walk, come to rest on the swing in Hydrangea Cove where you have a broad view of the whole garden.

This garden's estimated size is 2 acres.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: Best to enter the garden through the gate on the left side of the house.
