The Horse Hill Garden

Dunstable, MA

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

This one-acre New England home garden, as the Garden Gate magazine (December 2023) described it, is a grand experiment 20 years in the making. The garden blends the exuberance of English cottage style with the contemplative spirit of Chinese gardens.

Meandering paths connect diverse flower beds, koi and lily ponds, patios, and tucked-away garden rooms. The layout invites exploration, with surprises around every bend.

From the magnificent bloom of redbud and crabapple trees in spring to the golden glow of false cypress in winter, there’s always something to catch your eyes. The front entry garden showcases a mix of dwarf conifers, deciduous shrubs, perennials and colorful annuals that offer curb appeal and seasonal interest.

The garden is more than ornamental. Vegetable plots, chicken houses, and passive solar greenhouses provide fresh produce and eggs year-round, recycling systems provide organic fertilizers, fueling healthy plant growth. Wildlife thrives here too in the layered landscape.

This garden's estimated size is 1 acre.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: To access the backyard garden, visitors will need to go a few steps down from a patio, or carefully traverse gentle slopes and narrow gates from another route. There are also fish ponds in the garden without fences.
