About

This garden is open twice this year: June 7 and September 20.

I started to think about a garden in 2002, but it took several years to figure out what I wanted to achieve. Since my red brick house was built as a boys’ club, it has an assertive presence on a street facing a river, a golf course, and Long Island Sound. I decided that pastel colors wouldn’t be swallowed by the house scheme of orange, purple, chartreuse, and deep red, for the south-facing garden which sits well above the street. This colorful garden has become a destination for monarchs and hummingbirds. Southport is a unique waterside destination and a great walking town. A brick wall faces the street, and to honor my grandmother, we planted a mix of peach, orange, and dark pink climbing roses and many varieties of clematis on the street level. This location is a perfect microclimate. The May-June bloom has become a “go see” legend in Southport when it is in its full blooming glory. The backyard is the shade garden, featuring an Ulmus americana. This elm is well over 90 years old and has been listed with The Notable Trees Project sponsored by the Connecticut Botanical Society, The Connecticut College Arboretum, and the Connecticut Urban Forest Council.

This garden’s estimated size is 1/2 acre.
