Welcome to The Cottage! The L-shaped property features a long narrow strip of land from the road down to the cottage, the gardens surrounding the house, and a sunken side yard. From the road there is a wide, grassy path that ambles lazily down a shady hillside through oaks and spruces that have been there for at least a hundred years. The path and several clearings are bordered by many woodland favorites for the Northeast. An oversized Victorian planter for seasonal color takes a place center stage. The path leads past an al fresco dining area and opens to graveled parking spaces. Cars are screened from the neighboring driveway with hornbeams and ‘Anbri’ laurels, and separated from the entry terrace by an old concrete balustrade. Steps lead down to the long stone terrace where a fountain splashes merrily in the sunshine. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the stunning Glass House, the homeowner’s working studio, to emerge into the back garden by a bubbling hot tub. Turning left down the brick walk, one can visit the most intimate place in the garden; the courtyard-like kitchen patio, with an array of magnificent planters. Returning past the roiling blue waters of the hot tub, one descends rock steps covered in low growing, flowering ground covers to the brick border of the sunken garden. The cherubs clinging to a tall urn, overflowing with blossoms, guard the descent. The surrounding beds have been overstuffed with a joyous blend of flowers, trees, and shrubs. There is a stone water feature, and a mural by Meri Adelman adorns a recessed panel on the side of the garage. The architecture of the garage is softened by the shiny green and cinnamon of southern magnolias at its corners. The final treat is a small, private brick patio behind the garage. Covered by a cedar pergola, lushly furnished and decorated with the garden’s signature urns, this place is a secret waiting to be told. All are welcome to sit for a moment.
