About

The 1830 Steepway Farm is one of the original Holly houses in the area. The garden dates to the early years of the ownership of Alice Draper (1920-1956). She installed a layout that is reputed to be after a scribbled plan from one of the Olmsted Brothers during the time that they were working on the “New” Katonah. The garden now comprises a formal boxwood garden with symmetrical perennial beds, a woodland allée, a rustic style “Retreat” garden, an orchard of fruit trees in a wildflower meadow, a “Pump House” cutting garden, and a boxwood garden for antique roses next to the existing grape arbor. Rare trees are part of the character of the property. Visitors will see examples of katsura, styrax obassia and styrax japonica, a Japanese umbrella pine, a crytomeria, a large spined, honey locust and a specimen sourwood. Barbara Israel’s collection of antique garden ornaments is located on and around the grounds adding sculptural interest to many parts of the property.

This garden’s estimated size is 5 acres.
