Squirrel Hall
Millbrook, NY
About
Squirrel Hall is a surprisingly amusing garden formally designed on a tiny village lot of less than 1 acre. The rectilinear layout emanates from a central axis defined by an allée of sixteen hornbeams with two niches. The garden is organized into a series of rooms with features usually reserved for larger properties. Rooms include a glade/cutting garden, an apiary with a bee shed, a sunken garden with fountain, parallel hedgerows of lilac, spirea, and bulbs, a dining courtyard with fireplace, an orchid house, a hornbeam allée, a tapis vert, parterres, a petite orchard, a Neoclassic folly/hidden tool shed, a secret woodland stroll, and another folly known as “the bungalow.” A little over-the-top, a bit tongue-in-cheek, Squirrel Hall is a lot of fun!
This garden's estimated size is ¾ acre.
