River Hills
Bedford, NY
About
A lovingly-restored 1790s Dutch Colonial house sits high on the property overlooking the Mianus River Gorge. The property meanders through many levels with outbuildings, a green house, dining terraces and seating areas for savoring select views. Stone walls and steps descend from the highest point through casual plantings, a fruit orchard, and a woodland trail walk. The gardens are intentionally designed in a loose style and a primarily native plant pallet to tie in with the larger pastoral setting. The design is anchored in the use of local stone hardscape, and the small barn (built in 2020) was made of stone and reclaimed Ash trees from the property.
River Hills is one of sixteen gardens featured in Larry Lederman's book Garden Portraits Experiences of Natural Beauty, which in the words of Judith Tankard, "This book is an exceptional personal record of some of America's most important gardens now." Most recently, River Hills was selected for the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Gardens.
This garden’s estimated size is 22 acres in total, with 10 acres of gardens and woodland walks.
