Poppies, Perennials, and Tough Dainties
Denver, CO
About
This garden is opening twice this season: May 24 and June 28.
I’ve been gardening since the late 1980s, when, on a whim, I wandered into the Denver Botanic Gardens and was told by a staff member to see Panayoti Kelaidis. I worked and learned from Panayoti for nearly thirty years. Now I work and learn from Mike Kintgen, who is the curator of the rock alpine garden. My small city lot garden is tightly packed with a 4-foot-high and 5-foot-wide sunny rock garden, which is mulched with a thin layer of pea gravel, as well as a pea gravel path, which on each side I grow perennials, shrubs, herbs and, against a fence is a nice climbing dropmore orange honeysuckle. Also nearby, scurrying up a pole is a native white clematis. Throughout all of my garden, front and back, I grow twentyfive shrub roses, which are fragrant, plus several have enticing orange and red rose hips come fall. In fall too, I harvest many fresh garlic bulbs, which I had planted in July. In a rocky area, out of my front door, I grow rock garden plants, since this area is shady. I purchase most of my plants from local garden club sales, and too, I grow native plants as well as delicacies from around the world. I’m thrifty with water and consider myself a hose-dragger, but too, I can often be seen streetside carrying a watering can for those dear plants in need of a drink anytime.
This garden’s estimated size is 2,000 sq. ft.
