About

This Howard Van Doren Shaw gardeners’ cottage was originally part of a large estate (Robert P. Lamont House c. 1924), with a pond separating the cottages from the owners’ house. When we bought the property in 1998 the cottage had undergone several renovations and the garden consisted mostly of concrete and junipers. We asked our landscape architect, Douglas Hoerr, to design a low-maintenance garden using primarily boxwood and groundcover. Boxwood hedges and large mounds, together with gravel paths, emphasize the horizontal axis of the cottage. The concept is closer to a French jardin rather than an English cottage garden—no beds of flowering perennials or annuals. Recent updates have been designed and planted by Kemora Landscapes.
