Pheasant Ridge Garden

Lake Forest Park, WA

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

Pheasant Ridge is 2-1/2 acres of curated woodland with small sections of meadow. The site slopes steeply to McAleer Creek in the NE corner. Purchased as a farm in 1944, it has been developed as a private garden beginning in the early 1950s. Featured are mature second-growth Doug Fir trees, native and exotic understory trees and shrubs, ground cover plants and many, many bulbs. There is a lot of quirky art scattered throughout the winding gravel paths that crisscross the garden. Parts of the garden are older, but about an acre is newly rescued from the weeds and planting is just starting to take place. There is no particular “style” here, just a wandering trail through the trees with many spots to perch and enjoy the birds and other wildlife. “Eccentric” is a frequent adjective used by guests. The lily pond and the earthen dragon installation are favorites of past visitors. There is a large, partially covered patio with a grape arbor that shades a table for al fresco meals. Many people have commented on the variety of textures, leaf forms and colors to be found in this shady retreat. Vivid annuals are found only in a few pots here, as the big trees block full sun from reaching the garden floor. This is a garden where you are encouraged to leave the stress of everyday life behind; children can run in looping circles while adults sit peacefully in shady nooks and take in the sounds of the wind, the birds and rustling of leaves.

This garden’s estimated size is 2-1/2 acres.
