Old Oaks on Owl's Nest Road

Wilmington, DE

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

Bill Duncan, a talented landscape designer, began decades ago to create his own garden on eight acres of woodland and fields that had been in his family for generations.

The property was split in three, and in 2022, Meg Spurlin acquired the 2-1/2 acre portion containing mature plantings, extensive hardscaping and water features, and many uncommon woody plants. To these lovely bones, Meg has added flower borders in the English style and other grace notes.

Friends doubted this lifelong gardener’s sanity, to take on such a project at age 75, but it is her dream come true: to live in a fine garden surrounded by estate country, with Winterthur, Longwood, and Mt. Cuba within a few miles.

This garden’s estimated size is 2 acres.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: There are uneven stone paths in parts of the garden. One approach is a path up a mild slope through woods. The other approach is somewhat longer, on a paved road and driveway.
