Mi Sueno del Sur Garden
Pasadena, CA
About
Our garden is part of the 1916 home known as Mi Sueño del Sur designed by Bertram Goodhue in the Spanish Revival style. We purchased the home in late 2019 and the house as well as the garden had been neglected for a number of years. We worked closely with Mark Bartos, a noted landscape designer, to create a garden that would transport us to the gardens of Europe with a fresh modern twist.
The garden makes use of a classic Mediterranean palate including olive trees, citrus, plinthed bay laurels, little ollies, African sumac, flowering white crape myrtle, Italian cypress, African boxwood and Chinese windmill palms.
Our inspiration, besides our travels, was the gardens at the Getty Villa in Malibu. We knew we wanted to incorporate artworks into the landscape design, and the garden features a number of large-scale bronze sculptures as well as a custom steel sculpture. The front yard is dominated by a large reflecting pool, which was original to the house. It was replastered and tiled and includes an asymmetrical pedestal that displays one of the sculptures.
The garden is magical, especially as the sun goes down. My husband is an avid gardener and lovingly tends to his numerous citrus and kumquat trees as well as his Pope John Paul II white roses.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: There are stairs at the entrance. Accessibility can be had from the driveway, however, there are step ups and step downs throughout the garden.
