Mansion Drive Garden
Alexandria, VA
About
The garden is naturalistic and layered, containing many different perennials, bulbs, shrubs, and trees. It is composed of many different chapters since the garden evolved by removing sections of bamboo, invasives, and poison ivy, replanting it, and attacking a new section the following year. Formerly apparently a riverbed, thousands of river rocks have been dug and incorporated into the landscape. Plant collections include evergreens, boxwoods, camellias, grasses, ferns, roses, hostas, topiary, and approximately 1,500 varieties of daffodils. The gardener is a former graphic designer and illustrator, who has a painterly approach to combining unruly and mannerly elements. A recent acquisition is a blue English glasshouse which is in constant use propagating annuals, perennials, and vegetables from seeds. Although there are diverse elements to the garden, repeated use of black and variegated plants hopefully provide links of continuity.
This garden’s estimated size is 1.3 acres.
