Husky Meadows Farm
Norfolk, CT
About
The gardens at Husky Meadows have been created over the past 30 years. The gardens cover an area of approximately two acres, and are laid out to recall the original farm layout from the time that the property operated as a dairy farm and orchard.
The original path connecting the old farm garage to the fields has been transformed into a grassy path bordered by a fence of French granite posts from Brittany, planted with espaliered apples. Below the espalier fence, the owners have created an extended garden space divided into rooms: an arbor with a boxwood circle, leading to a long perennial bed, and finally to a small pool garden. Hemlock hedges divide the spaces, and the gardens are ornamented with stone troughs from France and decorative ironwork assembled from filigreed ironwork salvaged from a local church.
Stone terracing leads from these gardens to the area behind the barn, which has been converted from farm use to a bosquet, with a ring of hornbeam organized around an old French cider press, and large stone pavers planted with an assortment of rock flowers.
Past this, the garden descends to a small sculpture garden featuring bronze ostriches, and planted with lupins. The sculpture garden leads finally to the meadow, created in the past several years, which is planted with native Connecticut wildflowers with successive blooms in white, purple, and yellow flowers.
The main house is surrounded by some of the oldest gardens, dating from 1993 and including specimen Japanese evergreens, azaleas and other flowering bushes. A beautiful thyme walk borders the terrace of the main house and leads to a woodland garden, planted with primula, hostas, Siberian iris, ligularia, woodland phlox and specimen rhododendrons.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: Visitors will need to traverse uneven stone paths and some stone steps.
