Heron’s Roost Garden

Essex, CT

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

My move to Essex last year gave me the opportunity to plant the garden of my dreams. As an advanced master gardener, I wanted to create a garden with at least 70 percent native North American plants with an attractive succession of bloom that could be somewhat self-sustaining. Using a combination of native perennials and shrubs along with birdhouses, a multi- tiered native bee house, and a rain barrel daisy chain, I have achieved my goal.

My plan is to use the garden to educate others about the importance of using native plants to improve biodiversity and the benefits of setting up a rain barrel system for watering the garden.

This garden's estimated size is 0.35 acres.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The garden area is relatively flat. The paths are covered with wood chips.
