Hedgleigh Spring
Swarthmore, PA
About
Hedgleigh Spring spans four generations of the Cresson family, beginning with the purchase of a “gentleman’s farm” by Ezra T. Cresson in 1883.
The central feature of the current garden, designed and built by his son William, is an early twentieth-century flower garden. The flower garden is surrounded by a series of garden rooms including shade gardens, a small naturalistic pond, a stream and waterfall, and a vegetable garden. An old and black gum trees among large plantings of azaleas and camellias. The utilization of the varied microclimates of this garden has led to a large and varied plant collection.
Charles Cresson, the current owner, is author of three books on gardening, a lecturer, and consultant.
This garden's estimated size is 2 acres.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The garden is fairly even terrain with subtle grade changes and a few steps. Most of the garden is wheelchair accessible but the pathways are grass and unpaved. Waterproof shoes are recommended in case of wet grass.
