About

Havenwood House & Gardens is located in northwestern Pennsylvania, horticultural zone 5/6, about an hour north of Pittsburgh and an hour south of Lake Erie. This one-acre British-inspired garden has been created over twelve years and is divided into many different garden rooms, with an emphasis on creating different growing conditions for a large diversity of plants.

Mixed border plantings fill each space, and include many types of garden features, such as yew arches, a pleached hornbeam hedge, a formal pool, a boxwood parterre, a meadow garden with birch trees in the old front lawn, a pergola walk with North American wisteria, a fruit tunnel made of pears and cherries, a twenty-foot rambling rose across the front of the brick house, a garden wildlife pond, and several bogs which hold a growing collection of candelabra primula.

A Saint Francis prayer garden, Daffodil Dell, Narnian Lantern Walk, and Houstonia- filled Moss Walk fill out the half-acre Woodland garden.

Havenwood’s owner, Julie Witmer, is a UK certified horticulturist (Royal Horticultural Society in Wisley, UK) and garden designer who works to create beautiful and ecologically sensitive gardens across the continental United States. She is also a garden writer, and a published garden photographer. Julie is also a popular local speaker for master gardener groups and public gardens. Havenwood has been awarded the Audubon Bird & Butterfly Sanctuary status, and is open seasonally for classes for all ages.

This garden's estimated size is 1 acre.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: There are gravel paths and lawn that may be soft. There are some steps, but these can be avoided if needed.
