Far Meadows
St. Louis, MO
About
In 1922, the present owner’s grandparents purchased 150 acres next to the Log Cabin Club, with the house designed in 1923 by the architects Jamieson and Spearl, with an addition to the main house designed by Paul Fenler in the late 1990s. The owners called the property Far Meadows.
The property presently comprises 29.5 acres and is very wooded. The gardens were designed in 1924 by Warren Manning of Boston who received his training from Frederick Law Olmsted. Much of the garden is now a meadow, and, in the early spring, a large field of daffodils fills the view from the back of the house. The English perennial border, the pool placement, and the white peony English boxwood garden are Manning’s work.
The terraces and fountains were also added then and were designed by Charles Reay. Gary Barnum, a landscape designer from New York, also worked on the property at that time. The garden is featured in a recently published book on Warren Manning.
The garden design is part of the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens.
