About

This Digging Deeper is presented in partnership with Lyndhurst Mansion

Join Eugena Pilek Swart, Curator of Historic Landscapes at Lyndhurst, a National Trust for Historic Preservation site, for a guided tour of Lyndhurst’s historic Rose Garden.

This walking tour explores over 180 years of landscape design history present at Lyndhurst. Participants will learn about the lasting influence of Helen Gould, daughter of Gilded Age financier Jay Gould, on the Lyndhurst landscape. Discover how Helen’s naturalistic vision relates to the way we garden today. Stroll past historic specimen trees to glimpse the Gothic Revival mansion designed by renowned 19th-century American architect Alexander Jackson Davis. Learn how Davis embraced the naturalistic aesthetic of landscape design pioneer Andrew Jackson Downing. Explore Lyndhurst’s extensive rose collection—its colors and fragrances—while learning about its history and restoration, including the return of historic perennial beds with help from local garden clubs. Participants will also enjoy a behind-the-scenes view of historic sculpture and garden accents not normally visible to the public.
