Belvidere Gardens

Glen Ridge, NJ

The Garden Conservancy Preservation Partner Garden

About

This garden is an experimental work in progress that brings great joy to the homeowners, who are also the gardeners. When the owners bought the home in 2017, the yard was overgrown with non- native plants, including a layer of English ivy coating most everything.

The pandemic provided an opportunity to rethink the entire design of the garden as they spent the summer of 2020 removing all but a few trees and shrubs, taking the garden down to the dirt. They’ve spent each subsequent summer installing a garden that prioritizes both nature and aesthetics.

They continue to learn from and with the garden, moving and replacing plants that aren’t happy and often letting the plants decide where they are happiest as their seeds disperse. There is still much that needs attention, but 6 years into the work, the garden has taken shape and parts of it are well-established while others are still new.

This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The garden is accessible from the driveway or sidewalk. The terrain is a combination of bluestone walkways and patios plus turf grass.
