Anton-Histed Nature Preserve
Palm Springs, CA
About
Our 4-acre “desert garden” began as a junk filled and overgrown 4-acre parcel with many natural/indigenous plantings that were barely surviving. After hauling away 17 semi-truck loads of debris, we began to nurture existing plants back to health.
Later, we added nearly 200 plants that now attract monarch butterflies, rabbits, quail, road runners, an occasional coyote or two, big horn sheep and a plethora of birds. Rock lines trails were added along with temporary irrigation until plants installed are established. Once established, all the native plantings which are drought tolerant can survive.
The project is on-going and continues to evolve. We keep it naturally groomed and it is weed free, with no chemicals or herbicides used. We’ve installed sitting areas and are in the midst of creating a hidden watering hole for rabbits and others to be safe from larger animals. Visitors say they have never seen anything like it in the desert—and we love to share it!
This garden’s estimated size is 4 acres.
This Garden Host reports the following Terrain Notes about the garden: The main yard is flat, but to the preserve there are about 4 steps down–there is a handrail. Paths are gravel–flat shoes are best. We ask all visitors to stay on trails.
