CANCELLED - The Marsted's Garden of Whimsy
Canton, CT
Garden structure/sculpture
In 1969 we began transforming a bland landscape into a "Garden of Whimsy." Pine grove and clothesline became terrace and swimming pool. Perennial and heather borders and a fieldstone retaining wall topped with a field of wildflowers fringed the northern edge. To the east, a pool house and purple greenhouse completed the circle. Separate small gardens now greet visitors. The Frog Pond with lilies and shade plants and Giverny, begun with seeds from Monet's garden, are separated by stone steps to the Secret Garden, behind a vine-covered fence. The Hosta Necklace weaves the southern lawn. Well-placed sculptures, mirrors, and benches invite the visitor to explore.
