Casa Madrina - Godmothers Cottage
Palm Springs, CA
Fruit/vegetables, Substantial native plants, Garden structure/sculpture, Organic/toxin-free
We had a chance to acquire this property when it was abandoned and derelict. I envisioned transforming it into a weekend escape-a private lush oasis to enjoy with friends.
Today our 1930's Spanish house is a fiesta of color! With patios of chocolate sandstone to blend with the mountains, earthy red walls, and a violet casita. Plantings include espaliered bougainvillea, fragrant jasmine, native and date palms, citrus trees, and an olive triad that shelters a generous entertaining area.
The front yard is my ongoing experiment with desert natives and annual wildflowers.
I designed into the infrastructure are all the elements of a sustainable landscape: permeable paving, infiltration zones, laundry-to-landscape greywater system, a smart irrigation timer and drip irrigation, habitat plantings, and good soil-building practices. Because of these elements, native and migratory birds and butterflies are regular visitors.
