Experts in the Gardens

Experts in the Garden Experts in the Gardens are garden professionals invited to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for gardens during an Open Day. When visitors want to know more about plants, design, or practical techniques—they can ask the experts. There are no additional fees for these programs, but some require preregistration. 2017 Experts in the Gardens programs will take place on the following dates:

April 29: Mendocino County, CA Open Day
Sheila Menzies & Joseph Taylor, Founders of Heritage Tile Foundation, as well as Bob Shimon, President of the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society & owner, Mendocino Coast Bonsai Nursery at Mullins' Mendocino Stonezone in Gualala. At Frog Song Farm in Point Arena, artist David Wayne Floyd will be on hand to discuss his work on site.

June 3: Suffolk County, NY Open Day
Prfect Place Celebration - Q & A on toxin-free landscaping, at the garden of Edwina von Gal in East Hampton. Edwina and her colleagues from the nonprofit Perfect Earth Project—promoting toxin-free lawns and landscapes for the health of people, their pets, and the planet—will answer questions about toxin-free landscape maintenance. Edwina will also give personal tours of her own garden at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

At Fireplace Farm in East Hampton, farmer, kitchen garden designer, Farmers Market & CSA manager Paul Hamilton will share his wealth of hands-on growing expertise with fellow gardeners interested in fruit, veg and cut flowers, and answer questions about the farm, CSAs, and farmers markets.

June 10: Frederick County, MD
Peter Couchman, Executive Director, and the staff of High Glen Gardens will offer free, hourly guided tours, Frederick, MD.

At Surreybrooke in Middletown, staff members will lead informative discussions on the plantings as well as the history of the gardens, outbuildings, and the Civil War-era house.

June 11: Greater Boston Area, MA Open Day

June 17: Mendocino County, CA Open Day
Sculptor and painter Rebecca Johnson on her stone and bronze work on site at the Meadow Watch garden in Boonville, CA

June 25: Suffolk County, NY Open Day
Tour with herb expert Cristina Spindler at the Peconic River Herb Farm, Calverton, NY

July 16: Milwaukee, WI Area Open Day
Horticulturists Dean Wiegert & Christine Sobocinski, and caretaker Steve Sandlin will be on site to answer questions, and historians John and Jodi Eastberg will give two tours of Afterglow Farm, Port Washington, WI

July 23: Chicago's North Shore, IL Open Day
Garden Celebration at Mettawa Manor: longtime Open Days hosts, Bill Kurtis and Donna LaPietra, invite guests of all ages to spend the day touring their extraordinary garden and enjoying many special activities, Mettawa, IL

July 23: Columbia County, NY Open Day
Owner and artist Linda Horn, land stewardship designer Barbara Hughey, and landscape designer Heather Grimes will be on hand to introduce guests to Linda's dynamic landscape, discuss the concepts and practices of landscape restoration, and provide practical ideas for creating healthy, beautiful, and low maintenance native ecosystems, Spencertown, NY

July 29: Minneapolis, MN Area Open Day
Mark & Kate Hanson, the owners of Ohm Sweet Ohm, will answer questions about the net zero home, reducing your carbon footprint, geothermal technology, solar panels, and the sustainable landscape, Roseville, MN

At the Downey-Bergstrom Garden, landscape architect Meg Arnosti of Southview Design and garden host Melissa Downey will be on site to answer questions, along with Scott Anderson, a SavATree arborist, Edina, MN

August 26: Aspen Area, CO Open Day
Landscape architect Gyles Thornely will answer questions about the design of green roofs at Mill Building Rooftop Garden, Aspen, CO.

At the Aspen Institute, landscape architect Ann Mullins will give tours of the Herbert Beyer-designed campus, Aspen, CO

September 9: Northern New Jersey Open Day
Trees from the Gardener's Point of View with Michael Clayton at The Hay Honey Farm, Far Hills, NJ

September 9: Middlesex County, MA Open Day
Chef Ben Elliott of Saltbox Farm & Saltbox Kitchen will demo signature seasonal dishes, and Abigail Flanagan, owner, Farm & Fable, with family-friendly cookbooks for sale at the Gardens at Clock Barn, Carlisle, MA

September 17: Fairfield County, CT Open Day
Landscape Gardener Laura Tuttle Stabell will be on site to answer questions about the art and science of gardening at The Harris Garden, Wilton, CT
