Native plants that may be in your backyard have a variety of ethnobotanical uses. Some have been utilized by native populations for centuries. Some native woodland and meadow plants may become the crops of the future!
4 p.m. - Creating Meadows in Your Backyard, a walk with Laura Tuttle Stabell
Whether your property is large or small, meadows can be a great way to encourage wildlife, reduce maintenance and create four seasons of beauty. Meadows are easy to create on existing mowed areas and can be designed to be user-friendly additions to the landscape by incorporating good design features. A variety of native plants grow in meadow environments and are excellent for providing food for bees and butterflies. Some plants are not only edible to wildlife but to people as well. Many native meadow plants are medicinal plants too. A season's worth of bouquets can be made from meadow flowers, leaves, and berries. Shrubs and some trees site well in meadows and will provide shelter food and perches to birds who visit. "Pioneer" tree species are among the first to grow in open areas. Meadows can be created in partially shady areas in woodland "glades and lees" and in woodland edges. Sedges replace grasses in shady zones. Plants like white wood aster provide late fall bee forage.
