Digging Deeper: In the Pink—Autumn in a California Garden - SOLD OUT

Marek/Bernatz Garden

Sun, Nov 4
3:30 PM- 6:00 PM

Joseph Marek and his partner, John Bernatz, have been gardening this spot in Santa Monica for twenty years and have explored many different design and planting ideas and schemes over that time. Joseph is a landscape architect and has been a plant lover his whole life. His particular passion is for roses and rose hybridizing. While the garden has been a favorite since its first appearance on Open Days in 2003 and is great to visit in spring when the roses are in full bloom, the garden is rarely seen by visitors in fall—often the most beautiful time to see California gardens. Aloes in the garden burst into bloom in shades of lime green, buttery gold, tangerine, and coral in autumn, with early November being the best time to see them here. The back garden holds a special surprise with an abundant profusion of magenta blossoms of Hypoestes aristata—originally a gift as a cutting from another plant friend—that has now naturalized and provides masses of unmatched color every fall. There’s never a day that goes by without an orchid of some sort or variety blooming in the garden, so be sure to keep your eyes open. We’ll have a tour through the gardens and share our thoughts on how it has changed and matured—like us—over the years. Join us for a glass of wine and if we are really lucky we’ll be graced with one of our perfect pink autumn sunsets.  Joseph Marek is a plant nut. His plant collections range from aloes to tillandsias and from epiphyllums to orchids. He enjoys trying out new plants and building new plant collections. John Bernatz enjoys keeping all the plants (and Joseph!) in check.
