Saratoga Springs, NY
In Saratoga Springs, behind a small West Side cottage named Winterberry, is this truly secret sanctuary, with an entrance featuring a line of hydrangeas backed by arborvitae and pachysandra that opens up to perennial gardens, raised beds for vegetables, a wildflower space, and a forest corner. The garden is designed to be environmentally friendly with bark chip paths that can be renewed; decomposed chips go on the flower beds. Chemical products are kept to a minimum. The flowers and shrubs are selected with the color scheme of blue-green, chartreuse, and red and white. Love of color also has brought yellow, pink, and other colors into the garden. There are a variety of places for sitting in the old garden furniture placed along the walkways and on the patios. Viewing the garden from many angles and being immersed in plants and flowers is very important to the Moodys, who hope visitors feel free to sit in these spaces.
