Wiccopee Garden--Dedicated to My Mother Albertina

Hopewell Junction, NY
Rare plants/plant collection, Substantial native plants, Garden structure/sculpture, Woodland/shade garden, Scenic view

Situated on Shenandoah Mountain, the downward sloping nature of our property naturally provides a lovely wooded berm that creates a sunken sanctuary, a sacred garden space designed with a sense of balance and harmony that instantly communicates a stillness, tranquility, and peace. The famous poet Makoto Ooka tells us Japanese Gardens "ask that you go beyond the garden spiritually, that you look at the garden not merely as an object but also as a path into the realm of Spirit." To create an oasis of tranquil beauty that combines aesthetic pleasure with sacred, contemplative overtones, several elements are employed and can be found in this garden: STONE, WATER, SHADES OF GREEN (primarily found in evergreens), PLANTS, BAMBOO, MOSS COVERED STONE, and a device known as HIDE AND REVEAL so that every turn of the path shows something new. At a certain point along the garden path the garden becomes a Japanese Hybrid. I leave behind the variety of red annuals and perennials with touches of yellow gold that I had chosen as the accent color and go "crazy" with color provided by more colorful annuals and perennials in other gardens. One first encounters a rock garden along the driveway full of all splashes of color often provided by towering cosmos, knockout roses, mandevilla, euphorbia, and shasta daisies. There is a black nine-pot stand of interest filled with hibiscus of every color. The Shed Garden adds interest and returns to the reds and golds of the Japanese Garden. To the left there is a golden Asian Lily Garden surrounded by a large Shade Garden, a Bleeding Heart Garden, an Epimedium Rubrum garden overlooked by a tall ornamental pom pom tree. The gardens outside the gate are also worthy of note, especially in the spring.
