The Glasshouse Garden
Whitefish Bay, WI
The Glasshouse Garden is a fifteen-year-old garden, set on half an acre, that surrounds an English Tudor-style house that is nearly 100 years old. Deb had a blank slate to create her garden, after she and her husband, Jeremy, opted for a geothermal heating system that required the installation of 180-foot wells, and then cleared the remaining overgrown landscaping. With the house as an inspiration, as well as travels in Europe, Deb created a formal English Garden, divided into rooms. It is overflowing with an abundance of color and form, as well as containing an Alitex glasshouse and classic garden accents-obelisks, stone planters, statues, and arbors. Each area has its own personality. The front garden is a cottage garden containing foundational shrubs and trees along with annuals intertwined with biennials and perennials along a white picket fence which Deb calls "controlled chaos." A layered garden evolved so that something is always blooming in the borders. The next "room" is the formal rose garden containing David Austin roses. The yew hedge is the main division to the next area of rooms, including a cutting garden, a white garden inspired by Sissinghurst Castle, raised kitchen garden beds surrounding the glasshouse, and a courtyard with climbing plants, including ivy, wisteria, clematis, and morning glories. A self-taught gardener, Deb does the majority of the planting and maintenance of the garden, as well as starting and propagating annuals and perennials in the glasshouse.
