Rolling Bay Garden

Bainbridge Island, WA
Open Days
Perched on high bank waterfront, this cottage garden's name was inspired by the sweeping views of Puget Sound's Rolling Bay. The expansive cedar-clad deck and lower bluestone patio are home to more than 2 dozen containers overflowing with flowering perennials and annuals. While many native plants, including Oregon grape and salal, were left in place, other species were added to attract birds, butterflies, bees and bats. Established hedges provide a frame for the garden and do double duty as a wind break. Hues of turquoise, pink and purple were selected to evoke kindness, calm and wisdom and local beach finds, like driftwood, shells, sea glass and rocks covered with barnacles provide year-round garden decor. Relax on the deck, meander on the surrounding stone path or settle into the swing -- everywhere you look you'll see roses, salvias, evergreens, dahlias, hydrangeas, lavatera and more -- and you may even spot an otter or bald eagle.
