Peace and Plenty Community Garden

Providence, RI
Organic/toxin-free, Urban garden, Garden structure/sculpture, Fruit/vegetables

Peace and Plenty Garden’s soil was first turned in the 1980s by a diverse group of neighborhood residents who were united in a belief that growing food in urban spaces could make people and a Southside neighborhood healthier and happier. Forty families and neighborhood organizations grow food for their tables and to sell as part of their livelihood. This includes hard to find produce found in many different home countries like Laos, Bhutan, Burma, the Gambia, Liberia, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.

Organic and equity practices are used in the garden to keep the soil healthy and vital, and to create equal access to garden plots. Many garden improvements and initiatives have taken root, including building out a food corridor with a diversity of fruits, vegetables, and herbs to the benefit of gardeners and neighbors alike. A stand near the main garden gate offers free produce to neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Many youth groups and artists have contributed to the vitality of the garden via the Outdoor Gallery, rain barrel structure, tool shed, murals, sculpture, and a free garden library.

Community, nonprofit, and school groups often use the garden for meetings and educational enrichment. The garden, which is part of the Southside Community Landtrust garden network, enjoys a gardener-managed structure.
