Order and Exuberance in a Hillside Garden

Order and Exuberance in a Hillside Garden

Oakland, CA
Open Days

After restoring a 1926 house, we decided to complement the house with a large Mediterranean-inspired garden. The Oakland Hills fire of 1991 had left a few of the original trees and roses, which we incorporated into our plan. With some assistance from landscape designers, we selected plant species well suited to the dry climate of the Bay Area and designed granite walls and curving pathways to promote good drainage. While the emphasis is on low-maintenance, drought-resistant plants, there is an exuberant abundance of colorful, blooming varieties planted in drifts, creating form and pattern in the garden. The tall Podocarpus hedge conceals neighboring houses while preserving breathtaking panoramic views from the terrace above. The koi pond and gentle splash of the waterfall offer a place for meditative retreat and attract various birds and wildlife.

Directions: From San Francisco, take the Oakland Bay Bridge East and follow signs for Route 580 East to Oakland. Then take Highway 24 eastbound to the Broadway exit. After exiting, get in the right lane and turn right onto Broadway. Almost immediately, you will turn left on the first street, Ocean View, at the crest of the hill. Wind your way up Ocean View and take the second right, at Manchester Drive. Number 6055 Manchester is the third house on the right, a Mediterranean with a circular driveway.

From the South Bay, take Route 880 northbound and follow signs to Route 980 and Highway 24 East toward Walnut Creek. Exit Highway 24 at the Broadway exit. After exiting, get in the right lane and turn right onto Broadway. Proceed as directed above.

From the North Bay, take Route 580 eastbound and merge onto I-80 westbound. Continue past Berkeley and Emeryville onto Route 580 East toward downtown Oakland and Hayward. Take Highway 24 East toward Walnut Creek and take the Broadway exit. After exiting, get in the right lane and turn right onto Broadway. Proceed as directed above. Please park on the street.
