Odd Duck Farm

Highland, NY
Organic/toxin-free
Although I do have two eccentric ducks, our tiny town back yard is a farm only in my imagination! The ducks generate my main source of fertilizer and only organic methods are used to encourage pollinators.
Garden space is measured in inches, so I have a great affection for plants that work hard all season by contributing variegated and colorful leaves. Unusual small trees, handsome weeds (native plants!), and the occasional vegetable are joined by tropicals and annuals. Scarlet, orange, and magenta flowers are encouraged so the crazy quilt that ensues cheerfully obliterates most of the paths.
When the only space left to go was up, vines became a bit of an obsession. They scramble up three arches and a variety of unsuspecting shrubs.
Presiding over the chaos is our Victorian barn folly. Originally intended house the ducks, it became our summer dining room after my mom insisted on being served her Mother’s Day brunch in it. A ceiling filled with dried hydrangea is accented by views of the garden thru vintage windows on every side. Open day guests will be served refreshments inside.
