Open Days, Edibles, Water feature, Xeriscape, Garden sculpture
When we bought the eighteen-acre rural property, there was no garden. Now we have a house, barn, a one-acre pond, gardens, two rescue horses, and barn cats. Initially, when we decided to have a garden, we had no fencing. We started with an herb garden, to which the deer wouldn’t be attracted, then later fenced it in to include other types of plants. We have roses and many different kinds of lavender all over, especially concentrated along both sides of a corridor that leads to the pond. The garden contains a number of sculptures by local artist Rebecca Johnson. Densely planted areas include a small vegetable garden with raised beds; a section that attracts butterflies and bees; mixed beds of flowering shrubs, perennials, and bulbs; a small orchard of mixed persimmon, peach, pear, plum, and very old apple trees; a rust collection of assorted wheels; bamboo in a horse trough; Russian sage; and naturalized gaura and bearded iris. The back garden parallels the barn, with its newly built bedroom, bath, and outdoor shower. Xeriscaping is the whole point of the garden and, although a watering system exists, in times of drought it is hand-watered by our dedicated caretaker. Fir, pine, and redwood provide an evergreen backdrop.
