San Antonio, TX
The owners' love of antiques and travel shows in the collection of garden ornament placed throughout the old-world style gardens. Garden rooms designed by John Troy, ASLA, take full advantage of the challenging triangular property and complement the striking mission style house completed in 2016. The path through the front entry court set with old millstones leads to a lawn framed by matching terracotta pots and trees. Past the lawn take a moment in the meditation garden with stone labyrinth surrounded by citrus trees and herbs. Cross the drive and descend stone steps into a boxwood maze set with more beautiful antique garden pieces. Through the ornamental iron side gate a flower-filled back garden is all about family with fun features like an ivy-covered troll straight out of a storybook. The gardening homeowner chose most of the plants and maintains the garden herself. A rear stone wall and water feature reminiscent of the Alamo presides over a large flagstone courtyard. The relaxing back terrace features a fairy tale mosaic above the outdoor fireplace. From the street large limestone blocks hold steep terraced gardens filled with trees and draped with flowering plants. Since opening for Open Days 2017, the owners have added even more plants and garden antiques.
