Distant Hill Gardens—Garden of Michael and Kathy Nerrie

Walpole, NH
Meadow, Water feature, Alpine/rock garden, Fruit/vegetables, Substantial native plants, Garden structure/sculpture, Woodland/shade garden, Organic/toxin-free

At Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail, we consider the entire 58-acre property to be a garden, from the cultivated ornamentals and vegetables to the native plants of our forest, fields, and wetlands. We use the term "garden" broadly to include the growing of any plants and believe in the importance of plants, their cultivation, and their use in the landscape to help foster an ecological balance between humans and the land. Some of the highlights of Distant Hill include cultivated gardens with hundreds of labeled shrubs and perennials; a mile-long wheelchair and stroller accessible nature trail; a half-mile long geology trail; a large native wildflower meadow; a nature play area for the kids; a boardwalk over a floating cranberry bog; lots of beautiful stonework, including a stone circle aligned to the setting sun on the winter solstice; a storybook trail with a new children's book the first of every month; more than 3 miles of hiking trails; and more!

This garden's estimated size is 2 cultivated acres.
