Set on historic Plymouth Hill, the 1840s Greek Revival house has expansive views over the Berkshire foothills. The current property is forty acres, five of which are house and gardens. Influenced by English garden design, the present owners created a number of garden rooms, including a small orchard, a rhododendron teacup garden over which a statue of Pan presides, a perennial garden enclosed by tall hedges, and a boxwood parterre used as a vegetable and cutting garden. Most interesting is a large woodland shade garden, which is home to rare and unusual perennials, trees, and shrubs. Developing a garden on a significantly sloping site was a challenge. A perennial garden is enclosed by tall hedges. The upper half of this garden is guarded by bronze mastiffs, while the lower half has a frog pond. An extensive shade garden features unusual woodland plantings. Visitors walking along the woodland paths will come upon a Laburnum allée under-planted with Hosta and Allium. There is also a small apple orchard and a large pergola draped with Aristolochia durior. While there are no gnomes, there is a silly corner. A conifer garden atop the rubble of a long vanished building is also being developed.
