Cedar Heights Orchard—Arvia Morris

Cedar Heights Orchard—Arvia Morris

Rhinebeck, NY
Meadow, Woodland/shade garden, Water feature

The gardens near the house, pool house and barn include informal plantings of a large variety of bulbs, perennials and shrubs designed for low maintenance and bloom from March to November. Yew hedges, specimen trees and stone walls lend structure. Further on the large vegetable garden/cutting garden includes a new border planting to attract butterflies and pollinators. From there a long path through a meadow leads past several ponds (with duck house in the rustic style) toward a large woodland garden of native plants and a large stand of bamboo. There are various structures along the way for rest and focus. A one-acre new apple orchard of 240 trees including twenty-four heirloom and new varieties for cider making was planted two years ago. The hillside orchard faces west with a stunning view of the Catskill Mountains.
