Casa Nancina

Santa Monica, CA
Water feature
Garden designer Nancy Goslee Power's own garden, Casa Nancina, is discovered behind a faded barn-red gate, where one enters a series of small, colorful courtyards with a tiny house inspired by visits to Brazil and Morocco. The garden unfolds to reveal many places to dine and settle in: a seating group in front of a fireplace, tables and chairs all surrounded by many terracotta pots with both common and unusual plants and trees. A rare Kashmir cypress weeps over a wall fountain and a path of herringbone pebbles leads to the central courtyard, the heart of the garden. Aubergine cannas and a cushioned bench against saffron stucco walls, tropical-looking king palm trees canopying the courtyard, a Majorelle cobalt wall with maidenhair and tree ferns in the background, blue morning glories draped over the studio cottage in summer, and a centered long water tank filled with waterlily pads and goldfish all make this enchanting petite garden a surprising oasis in seaside Santa Monica.
