Adelaide House Garden
New Canaan, CT
As the third owner of Adelaide House, Sarina Vetterli arrived with no gardening experience whatsoever. But an enchanting site soon coaxed her to take up the hobby with great enthusiasm. Inspired by local master gardeners, notable nurseries, renowned florists, and a handful of excellent horticultural books, she has created a tribute of sorts to plant people, her favorite kind. The cutting beds are filled with perennials sourced from annual plant sales and specialty nurseries, and the wildflower garden attracts pollinators from the first spring thaw. A pretty forest overlook is framed by wisteria, smoke bushes, and specimen trees. Other planting areas include a shade garden, front courtyard with snowbell trees, hydrangea borders, and a forest edge garden. Sarina has often welcomed local gardening enthusiasts to chat about plant selection, best practices, and how to reinterpret the beauty of outstanding public gardens to a personal one.
