Los Angeles, CA
After house hunting for two years, Tracey Roden and Kamran Ardalan were thrilled to finally find a house that they loved. The prior homeowners had beautifully remodeled the house but the backyard was never fully completed. And because the main living space completely opens into the backyard, they both felt it was an integral extension of the house. Their goal was to enhance the modern design and architectural aesthetics of the house but at the same time be low maintenance, drought-tolerant, and most importantly, be able to withstand a very active little boy (and his friends). Tracey and Kamran also wanted to incorporate elements of their backgrounds and personalities. For Kamran who spent much of his childhood in Iran, that meant having specific fruit trees (such as pomegranate and fig) as well as a water feature. For Tracey, who enjoys entertaining, an outdoor fireplace where plenty of friends could gather was at the top of the list. They also both wanted a yard that would grow with the needs and activities of their son but not look like a playground. Since the backyard was designed to be low-maintenance, Kamran and his son are able to spend their time planting and taking care of the vegetable garden, which has become a special activity for the two of them. They all look forward to continuing to enjoy their outdoor space while adding more personal touches along the way.
