James Pettigrew and Sean Stout
James Pettigrew (left in photo) and Sean Stout are the creative forces behind Organic Mechanics, a garden design/build firm based in San Francisco, with a focus on sustainable design and organic gardening practice. Sean and James find creative ways to use repurposed materials of all kinds and have an affinity for rust in the garden. They design and create one-of-a-kind gardens that provide refuge for humans and nature’s creatures, and they have a fondness for California natives.
Sean and James's own secret garden is in the heart of San Francisco, nestled behind two historic buildings. These structures were erected in the early 1900s in the city's theater district and are three blocks from Union Square, on the dividing line between prosperous Nob Hill and the notorious Tenderloin districts. It is extremely urban. However, from the gritty sidewalks and treeless streets, you are just a garden gate away from an amazing urban oasis.
