Once an abandoned and overgrown rail track, today the High Line in New York City is an evolving cultural center for locals and tourists alike—an iconic example of creative landscape design with plantings inspired by a self-seeded landscape that had emerged over twenty-five years.

Drawing from their book, Gardens of the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes, coauthors Piet Oudolf and Rick Darke, along with graphic designer Lorraine Ferguson, will take you on a dynamic, visual journey through the planting designs and plant palette of the remarkable four-season gardens of the High Line.

Piet Oudolf is among the world’s most innovative garden designers and a leading exponent of naturalistic planting, a style that takes inspiration from nature but employs artistic skill in creating planting schemes. Oudolf's extensive work for more than thirty years includes public and private gardens all over the world.

Rick Darke is a landscape consultant, lecturer, and photographer who blends art, ecology, and cultural geography in the design and stewardship of living landscapes. His work draws on a background in field botany and ecology and decades of international exploration as curator of plants at Longwood Gardens.

Lorraine Ferguson, an independent graphic designer, collaborates closely with artists, curators and authors in designing publications, visual identities, and environmental graphics. She was formerly chief designer at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and has taught at Yale, Harvard, and Cooper Union.
