Saturday, October 1, 2011

9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Morning program

A case study in using data collected by your organization for public education and interpretation: Nancy Kartes and other staff members at the Bellevue Botanical Garden will share the process they developed for their plant collections database and how they adapted it as a tool for public education and interpretation. First we will be given an overall view of the effort, from the accession of a plant to the point of public access, and then we will divide into groups and the expert on each step of the process will expand on that step.

Afternoon program

ESRI is a company that aids organizations in employing information gathered by GIS (geographic information system). They have a number of software-hardware products useful for presenting information in spatial terms. Their ArcGIS has been used by botanical gardens. A ERIS representative from Olympia, Washington, will give a presentation on the usefulness of their system in mapping collections. A BG Base user will give a presentation on this database, widely used by botanical gardens to manage their plant collections, and its strengths and weaknesses.

Afternoon panel

Panel members Ed Moydell, Sarah Reichard, and Nancy Kartes will discuss ways to use your garden data to educate your public and to guide interpretation that supports your organizational mission. They will field questions from participants.
